A very useful design element in macramé is the use of a diamond shape made out of double half hitches, with a filler pattern inside of the diamond. These are two of many variations that can be used as fillers. Both are based on square knots. These samplers are made using 16 cords (8 doubled cords).

To make the pattern on the left, make the top half of a diamond shape. A second row of double half hitches is optional (shown here). Then, using your 4 most central cords, make a square knot sennit (shown here with 5 square knots) starting from the top of the diamond. Then, using the next four cords to the left (leaving out the two cords on the extreme left), make a single square knot. Repeat on the right side. Close your diamond.

To make the pattern on the right, make the top half of the diamond. Then make a square knot omitting the two cords on the extreme left and the two cords on the extreme right. Using the 8 central cords as core cords, make a square knot around them with two knotting cords from the left and two from the right. (You may, if you wish, use 10 cords as core cords and use only one knotting cord from each side for your knotting cords. Close your diamond.
